In Romans 4, Paul talks about the faith by Abraham. Abraham faith show us two things. One thing is that what we received from God (salvation) is a gift. The other thing Abraham's faith show is that the relationship between God and us is through faith not by physical attributes. For example, Paul brings up circumcision, Romans 4 tells us that being circumcised doesn't mean you built up relationship with God, Abraham circumcised because he establish his faith between him and God.
Faith is the most important thing when building our relationship with us and God. All kinds of traditions or physical attributes are important but not essential when we are building our relationship with God.
